A province is grieving. Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba, a 44-year-old ANC legislator, medical doctor, and former mayor, died on Saturday after being struck by a vehicle while jogging on Allen Street in Newcastle — one of the town’s busiest roads, carrying over 60,000 vehicles daily. His death has sent shockwaves across KwaZulu-Natal’s political landscape, drawing tributes from allies and opponents alike.
Mahlaba was not a one-dimensional politician. He wore multiple hats throughout his career, and wore each one with distinction. At the time of his passing, he was serving as an ANC member of the Provincial Task Team (PTT), a member of the KZN Legislature, and chairperson of several legislature committees — roles that placed him at the heart of provincial governance.
His career spanned medicine and public service in equal measure. As a qualified medical doctor, he served communities in the Amajuba district before stepping fully into politics. He went on to serve as mayor of Newcastle Local Municipality between 2019 and 2021, MEC for Public Works and Human Settlements, and later MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture. He also held the position of ANC regional chairperson for the Mbuso Kubheka Region, former ANC Youth League chairperson, and former ANC provincial treasurer.
KZN police spokesperson Col Robert Netshiunda confirmed that investigators are pursuing a case of culpable homicide following the accident. The incident occurred on Allen Street, a major Newcastle transport artery.
Deputy Minister of Higher Education Nomusa Dube-Ncube, who described Mahlaba as both a trusted comrade and close friend, captured what many felt: “Words fail to capture the depth of this loss.” KZN Sport, Arts and Culture MEC Mntomuhle Khawula added that Mahlaba’s rare combination of calmness, respect, and humility set him apart from his peers — qualities increasingly hard to find in political life.
The ANC extended its condolences to Mahlaba’s wife, Dr Busi Mahlaba, their children, and the entire family. Memorial and funeral arrangements are yet to be confirmed by the family. For a generation of young South Africans watching how leadership should look, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba leaves behind a blueprint worth studying — a man who chose to serve his people in a hospital ward and a legislature chamber with equal conviction.
